SMD, Inc., to Represent FMC Peroxygen
Water and Wastewater Treatment Products

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

FMC Corporation announced today that SMD, Inc. (dba Southland Environmental) will serve as a sales representative and technical applications consultant for FMC peroxygen water treatment products in California, Texas and Washington.

The agreement covers the municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment markets, according to Jeffrey G. Butryn, FMC marketing manager, hydrogen peroxide. "This arrangement with Southland signals our intent to capitalize on the growing trend to replace chlorine," said Butryn. "The pace of growth has increased because of the upward movement in chlorine pricing and increasing environmental regulation of chlorine and associated costs."

Scott Duggan, President, Southland Environmental, said that as a result of the agreement, specialized peroxide marketing and technical services will be made available to local and regional customers. "In the application area of chlorine replacement," stated Duggan, "the use and application of hydrogen peroxide is generally not well understood. This relationship will provide the applications expertise necessary to capitalize on the growth potential of peroxide."

Duggan is optimistic about hydrogen peroxide's role as a chlorine replacement because of its performance characteristics. "Hydrogen peroxide is the ideal substitute for chlorine," Duggan explained. "It is effective over a wide range of pollutants without the obvious disadvantages." According to Duggan, advantages of hydrogen peroxide include ease of use, product safety, no harmful by-products or air emissions, and performance and cost comparable to chlorine.

The products covered in the agreement with Southland include hydrogen peroxide, OxyPureTM, peracetic acid and PermeoxTM. FMC's peroxygen products are used in water and wastewater applications requiring chlorine replacement, hydrogen sulfide abatement, taste and odor control, bioremediation and potable water treatment.
